When Milk Makeup came out with a full line of hemp oil-based products, we were a little skeptical. I mean, it’s the perfect marketing gimmick. But we soon fell in love with the nourishment the Kush line provides—in particular, this lip balm, which comes in four shades as well as clear and leaves your lips hydrated.
Works well with: Acids and retinoids as it may mitigate the irritation they cause.
“It has a crispy, nutty taste and can be used on salads as a replacement for olive oil,” adds Spiegel. “It is high in omegas and full of essential amino acids that help make younger, smoother-looking skin and reduce inflammation in the body.” Because it is a highly volatile oil, she does say it must be kept refrigerated and not heated.
How to Use It
“It can be marketed on its own or as an ingredient in moisturizing topicals,” says MacGregor. “Make sure you know the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil. The latter absorbs into skin and binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain. It can have effects that are only beginning to be understood on anxiety, mood, sleep and many other conditions. CBD can also have low levels of THC which has obvious psychoactive effects.”
Main benefits: Reduces inflammation, hydrates, regulates oil production.
Hemp seed oil—not to be confused with hemp oil, which is a blanket term for all oils that come from hemp and can include cannabidiol (CBD) oil—is made out of purely hemp seeds. CBD oil, in turn, is made from leaves, stalks, and flowers of hemp (and sometimes seeds as well). “Hempseed Oil is the oil derived from the seeds of the hemp plant which is a cannabis plant cultivated for non-drug use. The oil is legally and used in large quantity for cosmetics, nutritional supplementation and skin oils. It can be legally used when it has a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of less than 0.3%,” Dr. Schep tells us.

There's often confusion surrounding hemp oil and CBD oil, so let's clear one thing up first: Hemp oil is a term used by different people in different ways. Sometimes, it's used as a synonym for CBD oil, but in other cases, it's used to mean hemp seed oil, which is a different product altogether. Here are the three main distinctions between CBD oil and hemp seed oil.
There are also some important distinctions in the way CBD oil and hemp seed oil are processed. The latter is usually made through cold-pressing hemp seeds to create a dark, thick oil that is highly concentrated and nutrient-rich. CBD oil, on the other hand, is made from different processes such as ethanol or CO2 extraction, which draw from the whole hemp plant and create a final product that contains more beneficial plant compounds, like cannabinoids and terpenes.

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound derived from the cannabis sativa plant. CBD is actually most well-known for its many potential health benefits that go well beyond the scope of regular hemp seed oil, as CBD has shown promise for relieving stress, providing a good night's sleep, and alleviating the symptoms of joint pain and arthritis.
In recent years, CBD oil has become an increasingly popular natural remedy. Its proponents vouch for its abilities to alleviate a wide range of symptoms, and people can't seem to get enough of this non-intoxicating cannabis extract.

How to tell if CBD oil is high-quality
High-quality CBD oils aren’t cheap to make, so if the price is very low, that’s a good sign it’s made with inferior or contaminated raw materials, substandard solvents, or it doesn’t contain very much, if any, actual CBD.
Test results that you can view and verify are essential because they will state the levels of both CBD and THC, plus a heavy metals analysis. If you can’t find this information, be very wary.
The idea of an isolate sounds good; it’s pure CBD, but it’s often made from cheap materials and lacks the other cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes that work in partnership with CBD. It’s when these elements exist together that they become more effective, so full-spectrum extracts are a must.
