side effects of cbd oil in dogs

Currently, testing is ongoing. Groups like the AKC Canine Health Foundation are sponsoring studies about CBD’s effect on dogs, though there’s no definitive answer yet as to its efficacy or safety. However, according to PubMed, CBD has not been shown to be detrimental in healthy dogs.

Though CBD is considered safe for humans and even for dogs in most cases, it can have side effects for both of us. While we can decide if the possibility of side effects is worth the potential benefits we could see from taking CBD, your dog can’t make that decision. You have to decide what’s best for your dog. So, keep in mind all of the potential side effects your dog might suffer before you decide to dose them with CBD. And it’s always a good idea to get your vet’s professional opinion first.

One of the reasons why CBD oil is becoming popular is because, as a holistic treatment, side effects seem to be both rare and mild. It’s a relief from prescription drugs that often have severe side effects that cause additional health issues.

The first step to understanding CBD oil is knowing where it comes from. CBD (cannabidiol) is a type of compound called a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants, including hemp and marijuana plants. There are over 100 different cannabinoids, but the two you know best are CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD has recently started taking the pet care world by storm, but THC still reigns as the most well-known part of cannabis plants, specifically marijuana (hemp plants are different). That’s because THC is the part of marijuana that makes a person high. It’s also the reason marijuana is dangerous for dogs.

CBD vs. THC

THC can cause disorientation, elevated heart rate, and respiratory depression. But before you condemn all types of cannabis, it’s important to remember THC is not the same as CBD. CBD in its isolated form contains less than .3% THC. And when it’s a quality product derived from hemp, the amount of THC should be zero. While THC makes people high and dogs sick, CBD doesn’t. It’s the therapeutic part of cannabis that is proving to be beneficial for both dogs and people.

Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic advises pet parents to stop administering CBD oil as soon as they recognize side effects. Too high a dosage without acclimation is the most likely cause of CBD oil side effects. HVC recommends waiting until side effects have worn off and then restarting the dog with a lower dose. After one week with a low dose and no side effects, the dose can be gradually increased until desired effects are reached.

Although CBD dog treats look like regular dog biscuits, it is important to remember that they are made with CBD oil. It’s very easy to give your dog too many CBD dog treats, so start small and slowly increase the dose. It is advisable not to give your dog any more CBD than it needs.

You want to check into where the hemp in the product was grown. We always recommend going with a brand that uses only CBD from hemp grown in the U.S.A. Specifically, hemp from Colorado or Oregon is known to be amongst some of the highest quality in the world. HolistaPet only uses CBD from hemp grown in Colorado.

Usually with CBD products from a reputable brand, the higher the price, the higher the quality. That’s not always true though. Don’t just buy the cheapest products that you can find. Thorough research can help you snag the most efficient CBD product for your pet. You can find premium quality CBD products for good prices, you just have to know what qualities to look for and then price compare some products.

WHAT ARE CBD DOG TREATS?
