Can CBD Absorb Through Skin?

If you’re a seasoned CBD user, you know that the compound can be taken in many different forms. You can vape it, eat it, or even apply it directly to your skin in the form of lotions, creams, and balms.

But does CBD actually absorb through the skin? Let’s find out below.

Why CBD in skincare?

One of the reasons CBD has become so popular in recent years is its reported health benefits. CBD is believed to help with everything from anxiety and pain relief to skin conditions like acne and psoriasis.

And while more research needs to be done to confirm these claims, many people swear by CBD’s healing properties.

When it comes to skincare, CBD is often used to help with inflammation, dryness, and even acne . That’s because CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that may help to soothe the skin. It may also regulate sebum production, which is the oil your skin produces.

Too much sebum can lead to clogged pores and breakouts, so by regulating sebum production, CBD may help keep your skin clear and blemish-free.

CBD is also a very hydrating ingredient. It contains fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, which are essential for maintaining healthy skin. Fatty acids help lock in moisture, so by using a CBD-infused lotion or cream, you can help to keep your skin hydrated and look its best.

Is CBD oil good for your skin?

Given that CBD oil can be applied to the skin, you may wonder if it’s good. Yes! CBD oil is perfectly safe to use on your skin. It offers several benefits.

It hydrates the skin

CBD oil contains fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, which help to lock in moisture. And as we mentioned earlier, moisture is essential for keeping your skin looking its best.

If you suffer from dry skin, CBD-infused oil may be just what you need to achieve soft, healthy-looking skin.

It soothes inflammation

CBD oil is also great for soothing inflammation . That’s because it has anti-inflammatory properties that may help to reduce redness and swelling. If you have conditions like psoriasis or eczema, CBD oil may be able to help lessen your symptoms.

It fights acne

CBD oil may also help to fight acne. That’s because it regulates sebum production and has anti-inflammatory properties that are believed to reduce redness and swelling. If you’re struggling with breakouts, give CBD oil a try.

It promotes healing

CBD oil is also said to promote healing. It contains vitamins A, C, and E, which are essential for promoting cell regeneration. If you have a wound or scar that you’re trying to heal, CBD oil may help speed up the process.

It prevents itchiness

If you have dry, itchy skin, CBD oil may be able to help. That’s because it’s very hydrating and contains anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe the skin.

How does topical CBD work

Now that you know if CBD oil is good for your skin, you may be wondering how topical CBD products actually work. After all, if the compound can’t be absorbed, how can it actually do anything?

So here’s a quick rundown of how topical CBD products work.

Well, it turns out that while CBD may not be able to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream, it can still interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS is a system of receptors that are found throughout the body. And when CBD interacts with these receptors, it can produce various effects.

When you apply a CBD-infused lotion, cream, or oil to your skin, the compound will bind to cannabinoid receptors in the skin. These receptors are responsible for mediating pain, inflammation, and other functions.

By binding to these receptors, CBD can help to reduce inflammation and pain.

In addition to binding to cannabinoid receptors, CBD also binds to TRPV-1 receptors . These are responsible for mediating pain, itchiness, and temperature. By binding to these receptors, CBD can help to reduce pain and itchiness.

Once CBD has bound to these receptors, it will begin to work its magic.

Depending on the product you’re using, you may notice the effects almost immediately. For instance, if you’re using a CBD-infused lotion to reduce pain, you may notice that your pain is reduced within minutes.

On the other hand, if you’re using a CBD-infused oil to treat acne, it may take a few hours to see results. It can take time for the compound to work its way into the skin and start reducing sebum production.

So, whether you’re using CBD oil or lotion, the compound will bind to receptors in the skin and produce various effects. And depending on the type of product you’re using, you may start to see results almost immediately, or it may take a few hours.

Does CBD oil absorb through skin?

As a CBD user, you might ask if tropicals work better than ingestible ones. After all, it seems like a lot of work to put oil on your skin just for it to be absorbed into your bloodstream, right?

Well, as it turns out, CBD oil is actually absorbed quite well through the skin. In fact, one study found that CBD was absorbed more when applied topically than when taken orally . It’s directly applied to the sebum-creating cells, making it more effective.

When taking it orally, the CBD has to go through the digestive system first, making it less effective.

So, if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to get CBD into your system, using a topical product may be the best option. Not only is it absorbed well through the skin, but it also produces effects almost immediately.

How long does it take for CBD topicals to work?

For most people, the effects of CBD topicals will start to be noticeable within minutes. The compound is absorbed directly into the skin and starts interacting with receptors almost immediately.

However, it can take up to an hour for the full effects of CBD topicals to be noticeable. So, if you’re using a CBD topical to treat pain, you may not notice the full effects for up to an hour.

If you’re using a CBD topical to treat acne, it may take a few hours to see results. It can take time for the CBD to work its way into the skin and start reducing sebum production.

But if you’re using a CBD topical to treat itchiness, you may immediately notice the effects. CBD binds to TRPV-1 receptors, which are responsible for mediating pain, itchiness, and temperature.

So whether you’re using a CBD topical to treat pain, acne, or itchiness, the effects will vary depending on your condition. But in general, you can expect to start seeing results within an hour.

Can CBD oil be absorbed by the Skin?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical with low solubility in water but good solubility in oils and alcohols. In the body, water soluble nutrients and chemicals are transported easily into the bloodstream, whereas oily and fat soluble nutrients and chemicals on their own are not, since blood is essentially a ‘watery’ solution. So, when placing drops of CBD oil in a mouth coated with saliva, first of all the oil droplets don’t mix with saliva very well and then only a small proportion of the dose taken is absorbed through the mucous membrane of the mouth into the blood – common estimates are that only 5-10% of CBD oil taken by mouth is actually absorbed. Any CBD oil that’s swallowed and then absorbed from the intestines passes directly to the liver and is metabolised (broken down) before entering the general circulation, which also greatly reduces its effectiveness. Alternatively, preparing the CBD in such a way that it is in a water-soluble form allows the chemical to be easily absorbed when taken by mouth.

How does CBD interact with your Skin?

The outer layer of skin (known as the stratum corneum) is a protective barrier for the body, being primarily made of compounds known as ‘lipids’ (aka ‘fats’). Similar to CBD itself, these lipids are insoluble in water but dissolve in solvents such as alcohol, and include oils, waxes and fats naturally produced by the body (including compounds such as fatty acids and cholesterol). Due to their affinity with lipids, oily compounds are more easily absorbed into the skin than water, which is why products such as ‘baby oil’, coconut oil and olive oil help keep skin looking and feeling supple and healthy. Even though cannabidiol is soluble in oils, the compound is actually poorly absorbed through the skin but can pass through the skin pores and enter the body that way. The CBD that passes into the skin then acts locally on cannabidiol receptors in the skin layer with no detectable amounts entering the bloodstream, so rubbing oil into the skin could help in localised areas.

Does CBD oil enter the bloodstream when placed on the skin?

However, studies have shown that high doses or large quantities applied to the skin actually can result in CBD entering the blood. Although taking a water-soluble formulation by mouth is probably the most convenient way of taking CBD, this shows that a systemic (whole body) effect can potentially be achieved by applying the compound to the skin. Probably the most reliable way of achieving this is by using transdermal (meaning ‘across the skin) patches, rather than applying oil, gels or ointments. These patches contain a concentrated ‘reservoir’ of CBD that, when applied to the surface of the body, ensures the compound is directed into the skin at a steady rate, from which it then gradually passes into the blood vessels that run through the skin, transporting it throughout the body. With skin application, the rate and extent of absorption will be affected by the thickness of skin at the site of application of the product as well as blood flow to the area (which is usually dependent on temperature).

Conclusion

So in conclusion, for problems with a particular part of the body, it may be worth trying CBD oil rubbed into the skin over the area concerned. If that’s not effective, or for a whole body effect, a water-soluble product taken by mouth can be used.
