cbd hemp oil for als

Despite this breakthrough there are still millions of people around the world that are suffering from this disease. The main symptoms of ALS include:

Many people around the world were unaware of what ALS was until 2015. A Facebook campaign called the ‘ice bucket challenge’ was recently launched to raise awareness of the disease. People all over the world including celebrities were having buckets of ice cold water thrown over them, to symbolise the feeling of the dying nerve endings that ALS sufferers have to endure on a daily basis. The campaign quickly became viral and has been one of the most successful in Facebook history, raising more than 100 million dollars and leading to the discovery of some ground breaking research.

Symptoms of ALS

A study undertaken at the Complutense University in Madrid showed the effects of CBD in mice with ALS. The mice were administered small doses of CBD and the effects were monitored for a short period of time. They found that due to the CBD the progression of the disease in fact slowed down, extending the life expectancy of the mice by 6 days on average. This time frame was translated into three years for humans.

About Kalapa Clinic

CBD or cannabidiol has been known to ease severe pains and can bring some relief to the symptoms of ALS:

I have tried CBD oil derived from hemp. After getting a card I have used 1:1 THC : CBD in Orange oil. I have notice little or no benefit. I think I become a bit lethargic from 1:1.

I am very interested to learn more about cannabinoids as an optional treatment for ALS. My first ALS clinic appointment is scheduled for April 15. I will ask my doctor for more information. Thanks for posting this article.

The study cited claims that cannabis can help delay ALS progression and prolong survival – – but remember, this can only apply to animals; there have been no human studies as of yet. If you read to the end of the article there is an important quote:

However, most of the studies that investigated the neuroprotective potential of these compounds in ALS were performed in animal models, whereas the few clinical trials that investigated cannabinoids-based medicines were focused only on the alleviation of ALS-related symptoms, not on the control of disease progression.

From what I’ve read, cannabis can help alleviate spaciticy and is a relaxant. So, in Sheila’s and John’s comments above – – cannabis did work as a relaxant/pain relief. It does seem to offer benefits in these areas without the side-effects of traditional medication. However, for “delay of progression/prolong survival”…I would wait for the human trials.

Another study by the California Pacific Medical Center of San Francisco tested the effects of cannabinoids on excitotoxic and oxidative cell damage, both of which are thought to contribute to the neurodegenerative effects of ALS. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was shown to be an effective treatment in mice if administered either before or after the onset of signs of ALS. If cannabinoids were administered at the onset of tremors, it was found that motor impairment was delayed and survival was prolonged. While this study did not include CBD, it is another example of the way in which these phytocannabinoids from cannabis and hemp plants can offer possible health benefits.

There are numerous benefits in the use of CBD for ALS sufferers, the most predominant benefits include the slowing of the progression of the disease, pain relief, and the reduction of spasticity.

While the research is still very early, cannabinoids may hold promise as a means for slowing the progression of ALS symptoms. However, at this point the research only consists of animal studies, making it yet to be proven as an effective treatment in humans.

CBD oil capsules: CBD oil capsules are easy and convenient delivery methods. Most people will be comfortable with capsules as they are another familiar delivery method and will provide a consistent dose. The same can be said for CBD oil edibles, like gummies. Unfortunately, they can also take a while to show effects. These methods have to be digested and processed by the liver so depending on stomach contents and metabolism, they can take up to an hour to work, but effects typically last 4 to 6 hours.
